Definitions and pronunciations are sourced from the Free Dictionary API, which draws on Wiktionary and other authoritative lexical databases. Translations are powered by the MyMemory Translation API, one of the world's largest collaborative translation databases, to provide accurate, context-aware translations across six languages.

Which languages are supported for translation?
You can translate between English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese. Use the "From" and "To" dropdowns to select your language pair, and hit the ⇄ button to swap directions. Definitions and pronunciation audio are currently available for English words only.
Where do the definitions come from?
Definitions, phonetic spellings, example sentences, synonyms, and antonyms are sourced from the Free Dictionary API, which aggregates data from Wiktionary and other open lexical databases. The data covers thousands of English words across all major parts of speech.
Where do the translations come from?
Translations are provided by the MyMemory Translation API, one of the world's largest translation memory databases. It combines machine translation with human-validated translation pairs to provide highly accurate results. For common words, multiple translation alternatives are shown so you can choose the most contextually appropriate one.
Why doesn't every word have audio pronunciation?
Audio pronunciations are available for most common English words but not all — coverage depends on whether the Free Dictionary API has an audio file for that entry. When audio is available, the 🔊 button appears in the results header. If it doesn't appear, the word can still be pronounced by reading the phonetic transcription shown in italic next to the word.
Can I look up a word in Spanish and get the English definition?
Yes — set the "From" dropdown to Spanish and the "To" dropdown to English, then type your Spanish word. The tool will fetch translation data for that word pair. Note that full definitions with examples are most complete for English source words, as the definition engine is optimised for English.
What do the synonym and antonym chips do?
Each chip represents a related word. Clicking a chip instantly searches for that word and loads its full definition, pronunciation, translation, and further synonyms — making it easy to explore vocabulary chains without retyping. This is especially useful for finding the most precise word for writing or translation.
